How do you access the training?

This course is arranged by Modules, which we also call Competency Areas. You can access the Modules by clicking on the Modules tab in this page.

What will you gain in the First Born® & More Home Visitor Training?

• Increase skills to build and sustain strong relationships with families 
• Learn to work more effectively with families to support their child’s development 
• Deepen understanding of culturally sensitive practices 
• Build skills for reflective practice and develop more strategies for self-care 
• Increase strategies and comfort level with having challenging conversations 
• Find opportunities to practice home visiting skills 

What is the structure of the training?

• First Born® and More Online Training consists of eight Competency Areas and is accessed in the Canvas platform. You will have access to these modules for as long as you work as a home visitor with a First Born® and More Program, and you can return to the training at any time.
• First Born® and More Live Sessions consists of five live synchronous calls via Zoom.

What will be covered in the training?

The online training will cover eight Competency Areas (also called modules in the Canvas platform) listed below. Within each of these areas there are core competencies – knowledge, skills, and attitudes or attributes – that home visitors use in their work. You will get a start on the competencies during training and your knowledge and ease will continue to grow with on-the-job experiences. These competencies will also give you a foundation for the requirements you need for the Infant Mental Health endorsement.

The five Zoom calls will help deepen your understanding of the online training with conversations for integration, opportunities to practice skills, and a chance to ask questions. The topics of the calls are below. Notice that calls 2-5 each cover two competency areas. Please work on the competency areas to be covered before the call.

2. Effective Home Visiting and Prenatal Home Visit

• Practice prenatal home visit
• Anticipatory guidance

3. Relationships and Infant Home Visit

• Practice 4th trimester home visit
• Practice with observation tool

4. Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging and Toddler Home Visit

• Examining our biases
• Practice 3-5 year old home visit

5. Challenging Conversations and Self Care for Home Visitors

• Practice challenging conversations
• Self-care strategies for doing this work

When do I need to complete the training?

• After the kickoff call, you will complete two modules (also known as competency areas) each week for the next four weeks.
• The online Canvas training must by completed within two weeks of the last live session.
• With appropriate notice to the Model Office, you may be allowed to take a little more time.
• Once you complete the live sessions, modules, and knowledge assessments, you will receive your First Born® and More PN-5 Home Visiting Training Certificate of Completion within 1-2 weeks.
